Can Home Insurance Protect You From Beauty Blunders?

The credit crunch has had some unusual effects on home insurance - and now there has been a rise in the amount of damage caused by beauty products and gadgets as people turn to DIY treatments to save some cash.

Research from Sheila's Wheels shows that the credit crunch has prompted around a third of Brits to increase the amount of time they spend on personal grooming at home rather than heading to salons and beauticians. Indeed around one in five admitted to spending more than three hours a week pampering themselves at home.

Unfortunately while this may be a money saver, the consequences are that more people are making home insurance claims as a result of beauty blunders - almost three in ten admitted they had damaged their home or furniture with a gadget or product.

Among the most 'dangerous' beauty products are nail varnish, with spills causing damage to carpets and bed linen; hair dye; and hair straighteners. It's not just in their own homes that Brits have made a beauty mistake either - one in five admitted to causing damage in someone else's property and not owning up to it.

With beauty treatments becoming more common in the home environment it's vital to make sure you're suitably insured.

The aspect of a policy that can protect you against these blunders is accidental damage cover. Unfortunately most insurers only offer accidental damage protection on electrical equipment such as computers and televisions. You may need to pay an additional premium to secure more comprehensive accidental damage cover that will protect you from all risks including beauty related mishaps.

Homeowners shouldn't rush to make claims for minor accidents, however. Remember any claim you make will wipe out a no-claims discount so always closely evaluate the value in making a claim.
